VAT: registration is not the same as a late return or payment
For registration, test the supplied taxable-turnover facts and distinguish the historic and forward-looking tests. A registration result does not establish that a VAT return or payment is late.
For an existing VAT obligation, use the actual VAT period, due date, filing/payment and regime facts. VAT runs on its own cycle, not automatically on the company's accounts year end.
Do the registration tests apply?
Review the threshold, standard-case scope and registration-timing facts. There is no automatic next step into penalty calculation.

The current VAT registration threshold is more than £90,000. Understand the separate rolling-12-month and future-30-day tests, registration dates and notification deadlines.

Is an actual VAT payment late?
Assess payment timing and outstanding balance separately. A late filing conclusion does not determine the late-payment charge.
