Do all these supported-case assumptions apply?

Rule summary

Rules and effective period

Late submission normally adds one point, including nil and repayment returns. Annual filing has a two-point threshold, quarterly four and monthly five. Reaching the threshold attracts £200; every further late return while at threshold attracts another £200 without adding another point.

An on-time return does not itself erase existing points. Below threshold, points ordinarily expire at the end of the month 24 months after the deadline, or 25 months if the deadline was the last day of a month. Check HMRC's actual record before entering a balance.

At threshold, reset requires both on-time filing for the compliance period (annual 24 months, quarterly 12, monthly 6) and submission of all outstanding returns due in the previous 24 months. The compliance period begins from the first day of the month after the day following the missed deadline.

The calculator models one standard return, not a persistent HMRC points account. First newly registered returns, final cancellation returns, special periods, frequency changes and same-month point interactions require separate review. Unknown points history gives an indeterminate financial penalty, not an invented zero.

Worked examples

How the result behaves in practice

Quarterly threshold reached

A standard quarterly return is late and the current HMRC balance before it is three points.

One new point reaches the four-point threshold: £200. At four points already, the next late return also costs £200, but the balance stays four.

Monthly return below threshold

A standard monthly return is late with three points already recorded.

The balance becomes four, below the five-point threshold: no financial penalty for this return. The same supplied three-point balance with quarterly filing would reach its threshold.
